Recruiting and Managing a Diverse Cohort of Freelancers

Learn about the best practices and mistakes to avoid for all parties involved in the creation and publishing of freelance work. Participants will hear strategies for identifying and recruiting a diverse cohort of freelancers and how to effectively manage and retain part-time and contract workers. They learn ways for publishers to deliver on the promise of freelance labor providing efficiencies and a robust flow of high-quality writing and multimedia journalism. Participants will leave the session with a clear understanding of the mindsets, habits and tools to make a freelance journalism interaction successful for everyone involved: the individual journalist, the assigning editor, and the media organization.
This session is designed for:
Individual journalists who are already freelancing or are interested in starting, whether part-time or full-time
Publishers and media organizations that are using freelance contributors, or want to start doing so
Editors and producers who assign to freelance contributors
They will learn hands-on skills to recruit, manage and retain a diverse roster of contributors, expanding the reach of their journalism and bringing a wider variety of skills, lived experiences and perspectives to the news they report.
Navigation tip: The Embassy Rooms are in the International Tower and can be accessed through the Hyatt Lobby Level International Tower or from LL3.
From the Lobby Level: When you are facing the hotel registration desks, walk towards the right, past the gift/convenience store until you see the elevators on your right. The escalators will be past the elevators. You will go down two levels.
From LL3: Walk to the right side of this level (if facing away from the elevators/escalators and towards the central foyer area). You will go around the corner past the Canva Studio in Piedmont all the way down until you see the escalators and elevators. Go up one level.
You cannot access the International Tower if you are on LL1 or LL2.
