DeAnna Tisdale Johnson is the Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of the Jackson Advocate newspaper. She joins a short list as one of the youngest publishers in the history of Black newspapers. Under her leadership, the Jackson Advocate is undergoing a significant transformation, with a focus on digitizing the medium to reach a broader audience and restore the newspaper to its former glory.
Johnson has been a published writer since the age of fourteen, contributing to the publication where her father, Charles Tisdale, was owner and publisher until his passing. Her mother, Alice Tisdale, now serves as publisher emeritus. With a strong dedication to journalism, Johnson oversees a small yet dedicated staff, striving to maintain the newspaper's legacy and expand its influence.
In addition to her work in publishing, Johnson has a background in music. She holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music/Vocal Performance from Tougaloo College and a Master of Music (M.M.) degree in Vocal Performance from the University of Southern Mississippi, both of which she completed magna cum laude. She also earned a Graduate Performance Diploma in Vocal Performance from the Boston Conservatory.
Johnson has received several honors over the past few years, including a grant from the Mississippi Arts Commission and the Leadership Award from the Mississippi Jazz Association. She is passionate about giving back to her community and plans to facilitate a summer classical music festival in her hometown in the near future.
Johnson is proud of her return to Jackson, Mississippi, where she continues to serve the place she grew up and contribute to its cultural and intellectual richness.
