María Arce is one of the RJI Fellows 2023-2024 at the University of Missouri where she developed ARENA, a toolkit on how newsrooms can take advantage of ham radio in the aftermath of a natural disaster. She works as the Editorial Coach for Latin America at Global Press, where she leads learning and professional development for a diverse team of reporters in the region. Previously to join this non-profit news organization, she spent an academic year as Knight Wallace Fellow 2022-2023 at the University of Michigan. She’s also an Ochberg Fellow at the Dart Center For Journalism and Trauma, a project of Columbia Journalism School. She was the Digital Multiplatform Director of El Vocero in Puerto Rico, where she also worked as Deputy Digital Director of El Nuevo Día and Primera Hora, and led the digital news coverage of Hurricane María, among other natural disasters. Born in Argentina, she worked as the editorial coordinator for Clarin newspaper in Buenos Aires. She has also served as a correspondent for EFE News Agency, TVE, and Galician TV, among other media outlets. She has won several international journalism prizes, including the Gabriel García Marquez Foundation Award and a WAN-IFRA Award. She’s the only woman journalist in the world who has twice won the King of Spain International Journalism Award.
