Caiwei Chen is an award-winning freelance journalist, writer and oral historian based in Brooklyn, New York. Her work has been seen in a publications including Wired, Harper's, South China Morning Post, Protocol, TechNode, Rolling Stone, and Radii, in both English and Chinese. During her career, she has closely covered the rise of Chinese tech industry and China's very online population. She is mostly recently the China tech reporter at Rest of World, and is part of Chaoyang Trap, a Substack about living on the Chinese internet.
Caiwei’s journey in journalism is driven by a deep fascination with China’s vibrant tech scene and rich online culture, as well as the cross-border exchange of business practices and ideas mediated by digital technology. Currently, she is dedicated to writing human stories at the intersection of tech, culture, and society, bridging the information gaps between the world's two superpowers.
Originally from Xiangyang, Hubei in China, and grew up on the fascinating place of Chinese internet. She is an alum of University of Colorado Denver, China Agricultural University, and Columbia University’s Oral History Master of Arts. She is currently an AI x Journalism Fellow at CUNY’s Craig Newmark Journalism School.
In her free time, Caiwei likes to read, sew, listen to music, ride public transit, people watch, and cook for her friends. She tends to have strong opinions about things she care about. She is not a morning person.
