Safety Workshop Series (1/4): Risk Assessment with IWMF (RSVP)
Saturday, September 21, 2024
10:00 AM – 11:00 AM EDT
Location: Grand Hall CD (LL2)
Threats against journalists are proliferating in the United States. In 2023, the U.S. ranked 45th on the World Press Freedom Index, down from 32nd just a decade ago. This year more than 2.6 billion voters will go to the polls in more than 70 countries, including the United States. Journalists play a crucial role in covering the elections. Join this hands-on workshop facilitated by International Women’s Media Foundation. Journalists will learn how to assess and prepare for risks they may encounter when reporting in the field. The training will cover mapping of actors, security protocols, contingency planning and best practices when covering protests. This interactive workshop is open to all ONA24 attendees and may be especially helpful for editors, staff, and freelance journalists.
This session is the first of in a four-part, one-day workshop series presented by some of the most preeminent organizations working on issues of journalist safety today. Those who participate in all four workshop modules will get a comprehensive experience beginning in the morning with practical skillbuilding and finishing in the afternoon with community connection and in-room peer support.
RSVP is required for each part of the series and ONA24 attendees can opt to register for all four modules or selectively attend those that align with their interests. ONA conference registration is required to sign up. Registered attendees can sign up using their personalized account link found in your registration confirmation email sent by registration@journalists.org. More information about the RSVP process can be found in our FAQs.
