Editorial Director of AI Initiatives
The New York Times
Zach Seward is the editorial director of AI initiatives at The New York Times, where he leads a team responsible for journalistic applications of artificial intelligence. He joined The Times in late 2023 after two decades as a journalist, product leader, and media entrepreneur. Zach co-founded the business news startup Quartz, which he led in a variety of roles over more than a decade, including as chief product officer, editor in chief, and CEO, before selling the business in 2022. Quartz won hundreds of awards for journalism and product innovation during his tenure, including two general-excellence awards from the Online News Association, world's best website from the Society for News Design, and Apple's best apps of the year. Before that era of his career, Zach worked at The Wall Street Journal, first as a reporter in Boston, then as outreach editor in New York, where he created the newspaper's first social-media team and directed strategy for web-traffic growth. In between those gigs, he was a founding editor of Harvard’s Nieman Journalism Lab, reporting on the digital news industry. He has also been an adjunct professor for NYU's Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute and the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.
