Ariel is an audience and product consultant and coach who helps newsrooms do journalism with and for their communities and build systems that make that work sustainable.
She has a particular focus on designing and executing research and engagement initiatives to uncover community needs and turning those needs into editorial and product strategies. She brings the community perspective into newsrooms through training, documentation, ideation, and prototyping.
She teaches a class on audience insights for the News Product Alliance’s News Product Management Certificate program and is a sustainability analyst and consultant with LION.
She served as the director of news experimentation at LAist and before that as the senior editor for community engagement. Prior to LAist, she worked at the Membership Puzzle Project, where she led a fund for experimentation with membership models and published the Membership Guide. She previously ran the Miami startup The New Tropic, reported from Nairobi, and edited the Christian Science Monitor’s Middle East coverage.
She’s an alumna of CUNY’s Executive Program in News Innovation and Leadership and co-founded Perspectives.
